Driving in Portugal

Driving in Portugal

Driving through Portugal is an exciting way to explore the beautiful landscapes that the country has to offer.

Whether you are taking in the stunning Algarve coastline or driving through the vibrant Lisbon and Porto, there is plenty to see and enjoy.

Before you begin your drive, it is very important that you take some time to get to know the rules and regulations of the country.

It is the best way to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.

Basic Requirements: Driving in Portugal

To drive in Portugal, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a full, valid driving licence.

If you are visiting the UK or an EU country, you do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) for short visits.

Make sure to carry the following with you when you are driving:

If you are renting a car, keep the rental agreement with you as well.

UK Sticker

If you have driven your own car to Portugal, on a big European road trip, you will need to ensure you have the correct country identifier displayed on your car.

The identifier for cars registered in the United Kingdom used to be a GB sticker.

However, since the 28th of September 2021, the identifier has changed to ‘UK’.

Therefore, all vehicles that are registered in the UK must have this identification on them.

Portugal has strict regulations on the items you must carry in your vehicle. These include:

Driving Rules and Regulations

Speed limits in Portugal

The speed limits in Portugal vary depending on the type of road you are driving on.

Some local or variable rules may be in effect, so it is always essential you pay attention to local signage.

In general, the country’s speed limits are:

Please note: speeding fines can be high. They can range from €60 (for minor offences) to as much as €2,500 (for excessive speeding).

Always adhere to the correct limit, for your safety and the safety of other road users.

Portuguese Toll Roads

As a rule of thumb, you will find that most motorways in Portugal have tolls.

Many hire cars come equipped with a ‘Via Verde’ transponder. These are devices which automatically charge tolls.

If you’re using your own car without a transponder, you’ll need to pay at toll booths.

As an alternative option, you can also visit a post office, within a few days of travelling on a toll road to settle your charges.

Drink Driving Laws in Portugal

In Portugal, the blood alcohol limit when driving is 0.05%. This is lower than the limit in England and Wales.

If you are caught over the limit, there can be fines ranging from €250 to €1,250. Severe violations can lead to a licence suspension.

Parking Regulations in Portugal

Parking in cities like Lisbon and Porto can be challenging.

When driving in cities and town, you must park in the direction of the flow of traffic.

It is best to avoid parking near junctions, tram stops, or on pedestrian crossings.

If you are caught illegally parking, the fines can be up to €300.

To be safe and avoid any ambiguity, it’s best to use designated parking areas - or private parking garages to avoid unnecessary fines.
