F1 Tyres Explained 2024

Since Pirelli returned to Formula 1 in 2011, their tyres have played a key role in the shaping of race strategies and even the outcome of races themselves.

There have not been too many drastic changes this year to the tyre rules – but there are some slight notable adjustments around the tyre compound.

Today, Pirelli are the exclusive supplier of tyres to F1, However, in the past there have been several tyre brands involved. These include:

Tyre Compounds and Selection

In 2024, Pirelli simplifies its range to five slick compounds, refining the spectrum to better suit the teams' and sport's requirements.

Teams have access to 13 sets of tyres each weekend. This is made up of a selection between eight softs, three mediums, and two hards.

This approach has been implemented to improve tyre management. It should allow the teams to better set up their selections for each tracks unique challenges.

Every race weekend, Pirelli designates three of these compounds for use. Based on the track and expected weather conditions.

These options ensure that teams navigate their tyre choices carefully in order to get the most out of their cars. From the high-wear softs (marked in red) through to the durable hard tyres (with the white walls).

Technical Adjustments

The 2024 season introduces minor regulatory changes regarding the usage of the tyres. Especially when the race takes place during wet conditions.

The rules dictate that teams can use two different types of tyre during the race. With a certain amount of flexibly in wet weather conditions.

Tyre Blankets and Beyond

A significant focus for Pirelli and F1 has been the move towards sustainability. This has been illustrated by the ongoing debate around tyre blankets.

While initially aiming to phase them out by 2025, concerns regarding safety and performance have led to a cautious approach. Their temperature now reduced from 100 degrees Celsius to 70.

The dialogue surrounding tyre blankets underscores the sport's commitment to environmental considerations, balancing these against the paramount importance of driver safety and competitive integrity.

The Impact on Strategy and Performance

The tyre regulations in the 2024 season, which can be considered to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary, underscore F1's drive to innovate, boost safety, and try to find a balance of sustainability.

The adjustments in the availability of tyre compounds, coupled with the rules on tyre selection and usage, promise to keep teams and drivers on their toes. Adapting to each circuit's unique demands.

Pirelli's ongoing development efforts, especially in the context of the tyre blanket debate and sustainability goals, highlight the sport's dynamic nature. Where technical excellence and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

For teams and fans alike, the 2024 tyre regulations represent another chapter in Formula 1's relentless pursuit of speed, safety, and now, sustainability, shaping the strategies that will define this racing season.
