How to check a car’s MOT history

If you need to check the MOT history of a car, you can do so quickly and easily using the government website.

It is extremely quick and easy to check the MOT and mileage history of any car. What’s more, it comes at no cost.

Using the Government's MOT History Checker

It is free to use the Government's MOT history checker.

Simply visit the Government's MOT history checker website. Then follow these steps:

  1. Click on the "Start now" button to begin the search process.
  2. Enter the registration number of the car you wish to check the MOT history for.
  3. The website will then display a report with all the MOT information available for that car.

Understanding the MOT Report

The MOT report provides a lot of useful information. Key details include:

  1. Previous MOT Results. Including the test number and whether the car passed or failed.
  2. Advisory Notices. Highlights what these were issued for.
  3. Mileage History. A good thing for you to assess the consistency and accuracy of the recorded mileage.

Additional DVSA Services

In addition to the MOT history checker, the DVSA offers another helpful service which details information such as the car's initial registration date, CO2 emissions, tax band, and the due date for the next tax payment.

Benefits of Checking MOT History

Checking the MOT and mileage history of a car is a vital step if you are looking to buy a used car.

The government's user-friendly website provides free access to detailed reports that can help you assess the car's roadworthiness and identify any potential red flags.

Remember, a thorough understanding of a car's history ensures that you find a reliable vehicle that meets your needs and provides a smooth and worry-free driving experience.

How can I check MOT history?

To check the MOT history of any car, you can use the online MOT history checker, on the Government’s website. Simply enter your vehicle's registration number on the website, and it will provide you with a comprehensive report.

Can I download an MOT?

Yes, you can download a MOT certificate. Since May 2019 the Government has run a replacement certificate service which allows users to view and save their MOT certificate as a PDF. To get the replacement you just require the vehicle registration and 11-digit number from the vehicle logbook.
