Where and How to Store Winter Tyres: A Comprehensive Guide

For winter seasons, some motorists choose to have a set of winter tyres at the ready.

This is because of the performance levels that winter tyres offer is far superior to summer tyres during winter conditions, as well as typically offering better performance on challenging surfaces than all-season tyres.

If you’re one of these motorists that has opted for winter tyres this time of year, you’ll perhaps be wondering where to store them once the weather starts to change for the better.

This guide will show you how to store both your current tyres and your new winter tyres properly, ensuring optimal condition for when you need either of them next.

When Should I Equip Winter Tyres?

Firstly, if you’re considering winter tyres, it’s important to know roughly when you should be equipping these seasonal tyres.

It is recommended that you use winter tyres for road temperatures of below 7°C. Technologies developed on winter tyres are better equipped for these temperatures, offering greater traction and overall performance than summer tyres.

Where is The Best Place to Store Tyres?

Choosing the right location for storing your winter tyres is crucial for preserving their quality and extending their lifespan.

A small garage with a car parked inside

This location should be indoors and not having drastic temperature drops/rises that may hinder your tyres longevity and protecting them from damage.

Here's a breakdown of recommended storage locations and what to consider:

  1. Garage: If you own a garage, this is one of the best location to store your tyres. Whilst temperatures will drop and rise, it should not reach any drastic levels that may damage your tyres. It’s also easy access for you to change your tyres as soon as the weather starts to change.
  2. Basement/Cellar: Temperatures are usually more stable temperature and humidity than a garage if it’s well ventilated, offering great protection against extreme temperature swings.
  3. Shed: A shed offers some protection from the elements, particularly rain and snow, providing a degree of shelter compared to outdoor storage. It can be a convenient option if you lack garage or basement space.

These places to store your tyres are not just convenient, but helps prevent any damage to the tyre.

How to Store Winter Tyres

Storing your winter tyres properly is crucial for maintaining their condition and extending their lifespan.

The process differs slightly depending on whether your tyres are mounted on rims or stored separately.

  1. Cleaning: Before storing, thoroughly clean your tyres and rims. Remove any dirt, debris, or salt residue using a tyre cleaner and a brush. Pay close attention to the sidewalls and treads and allow them to dry completely before proceeding.
  2. Inflation: Inflate the tyres to the pressure recommended on the tyre sidewall, not the pressure recommended for driving. This is usually slightly higher to help maintain the shape of the tyre.
  3. Storage: If possible, store the tyres on their rims vertically, ideally on a dedicated tyre rack. This prevents flat spotting and maintains the tyre's round shape. If you don’t have a rack, ensure they are stacked upright and securely. If vertical storage isn't possible, store them horizontally, ensuring they are evenly stacked and supported to prevent deformation. Avoid stacking more than two tyres high.
  4. Protection: Consider using tyre covers or bags to protect your tyres from dust, dirt, UV rays, and moisture.

This method is generally easier and safer, as the tyres maintain their shape and are less susceptible to damage.

When Should I Equip Summer Tyres?

So, we’ve covered where and how to store your tyres, but what if it’s winter tyres you’re equipping and summer tyres you are storing away?

For you to put on your previously stored summer tyres, you should wait until temperatures are constantly above 7°C, which coincides with when you should be equipping your winter tyres.

This will ensure a smooth ride throughout dry and less challenging driving conditions.

Disposing of Tyres

Improper disposal is bad for the environment – instead, check out recycling options at your local tyre fitter or waste disposal centre.

Some places might even give you a bit of money off new tyres in exchange.

Bear in mind there might be a small charge for disposal, and dumping tyres is illegal.
