Available as a hatchback or saloon, the all-new EV4 will go toe-to-toe with popular electric rivals from VW, Hyundai, and MINI. Here’s what we know so far.
The official images are in, and it seems Kia wasn’t lying: the new EV4 looks identical to the concept upon which it’s based. But is that a good thing? Well that’s a matter of personal taste and, of course, which bodystyle you pick.
Starting at the front, the EV4’s face is arguably its most successful element. A low nose and vertically oriented headlamps combine to create what Kia calls, the ‘EV Tiger Face’. No, we’re not sure where the ‘Tiger’ part comes from either, but it’s fair to say the EV4 boasts a striking frontal design which looks like it could also benefit aerodynamic efficiency.

The sleek theme continues down the sides and into the flanks. Flush door handles, distinctively styled 19-inch alloys, and a contrasting black C-Pillar which bleeds into the roof, all help to endow this family machine with some welcome character. Meanwhile, strong creases and accentuated rear wheel arches contribute to a general air of solidity.
Things get a little more controversial at the rear. Remember when we said you could pick between a hatchback and a saloon? Well, we think the latter sits comfortably in acquired taste territory. While some saloons — like Mazda’s handsome new 6e — seamlessly transition from C-pillar to boot lid, this Kia takes an erm… different approach. According to the marque, the saloon’s contrasting rear embodies an ‘opposites united’ design philosophy. However, although we understand the logic behind this distinctive look, in execution, it’s a little jarring. Will it grow on us? Who knows. BMW’s awkward iX did, so maybe there’s hope for the EV4 yet.
Anyway, the saloon’s odd backside shouldn’t matter much to us Brits, given the majority of EV4’s in the UK will be hatchback flavoured; the fastback is primarily destined for markets outside of Europe. Of much greater relevance, are the EV4’s driving dynamics, range, and price. Unfortunately, though, Kia’s keeping a tight lid on those key stats until the model’s grand reveal on February 27th.
Until then, we can report that the EV4 appears to sit on Hankook’s high-performance ION Evo tyre, suggesting the Korean marque has given some serious consideration to the EV4’s dynamic poise and handling. Furthermore, it’s likely the new car will borrow its electric internals from existing models in the EV family, so expect a strong showing in terms of range and acceleration.
If, like us, you can’t wait to find out if the EV4’s interior has a similar concept car-inspired feel, keep your eyes peeled for our next update. In the meantime, let us know if you love or loathe this Kia’s daring design.
