The Pembleton came about because the company boss found out lightweight three-wheel cars could travel free on the ferry to Ireland.

That first car was built in just six weeks and, as Jonny Smith finds out, has led to the perfectly formed four-wheeler T24 – the lightest new car on sale in the UK right now.

Handmade in rural Worcestershire by father and son team Phil and Guy Gregory, the T24 tips the scales at just 361kg, or less than half the weight of a Lotus Elise. However, with a 79hp 850cc V-twin engine up front, the Pembleton has similar performance to a hot hatch as it will crack 0-60mph in six seconds.

That’s all you need as Jonny finds out on the open road when the car only has a simple flyscreen and no roof. It’s not what’s missing, though, but having just the essentials that makes Jonny grin and laugh out loud as he gets to grips with this perfect balance of old and new driving spirit.
