How does tyre width impact fuel efficiency?

Tyre width (e.g., 205/45 R18) plays a significant role in fuel efficiency.

Narrower tyres have less rolling resistance, meaning less energy is required to move the vehicle. This leads to lower fuel consumption, making them a better option for improving efficiency, especially in city driving or on long journeys.

Wider tyres, however, have a larger contact patch with the road, which increases rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag. This extra resistance means the engine has to work harder, consuming more fuel. While wider tyres offer other benefits, they are generally less efficient than narrower ones when it comes to fuel economy.

If fuel efficiency is a priority, consider smaller vehicles, and therefore tyres with low rolling resistance technology, as they are designed to reduce energy loss while maintaining performance.
