Can I use winter tyres in the summer?
It is possible to use winter tyres in the summer, but you will not experience the optimal levels of performance. Winter tyres are designed for use in cold conditions. When the temperature drops below 7°C. In warmer weather conditions, the tread compound used in winter tyres can become too soft, reducing the performance and durability.
Do winter tyres work in the summer?
Winter tyres are not designed for use in warm weather – and so the performance levels can be adversely affected. Especially once the temperature rises higher than 7°C.
The tread compound used in winter tyres has been developed to remain flexible in cold weather, allowing for higher levels of grip on both snow and ice. In warmer conditions, the rubber within the compound can become too soft and the tyres can wear out quicker.
Is it safe to use winter tyres in summer?
Using winter tyres in summer is not ideal - as they are not designed for use in warm weather. This can reduce their performance and safety on the road. It is best to use summer tyres in the summer and winter tyres in the winter.
Alternatively, all season tyres can deliver a good performance throughout the seasons.
Is it illegal to use winter tyres in the summer?
It is not illegal to use winter tyres in the summer in the UK.
Is it illegal to mix winter tyres with summer?
It is not illegal to mix winter and summer tyres. However, mixing winter tyres with summer tyres is not recommended as it can cause problems with handling and stability.
What is the difference between winter tyres and summer tyres?
Winter tyres are designed with a different tread pattern and rubber compound than summer tyres.
Winter tyres have deeper tread grooves and more sipes (small slits in the tread) to provide better traction on both snow and ice.
The rubber compound used in winter tyres is also designed to remain flexible in cold weather, with higher silica levels – which helps to deliver better grip.
Summer tyres typically have a shallower tread pattern and a harder rubber compound - providing better performance and durability in warmer weather conditions.
