When it comes time to buy a new set of car tyres, you may find the sheer number of options available to you overwhelming.
There is a vast range of different manufacturers and models on offer. With many different choices to meet your needs.
As one of the most renowned tyre manufacturers on the market, Michelin’s tyres are often sought after. If you have made it here, you are likely trying to decide between two of their more popular tyres – the Primacy 3 and the Primacy 4.
Both, of these tyres come from their well-regarded Primacy range. But what is the difference between the Primacy 3 and the Primacy 4? We’ll look to answer that question in the following article.
The Michelin Primacy 3 can now be considered one of the elder statesmen of the tyre industry – first launched in the year 2011. However, despite the models age, it still proves to be a popular tyre, which is well received by those who buy it.
The tyre features auto-blocking sipe technology and a patented rubber compound – which result in an excellent performance when driving in wet conditions.
An abrasion resistant compound is used in the construction of the Primacy 3 to increase longevity and optimise the tyre’s contact path with the road – for increased mileage and durability.
Buy Primacy 3 tyresThe Michelin Primacy 4 is the successor to the very popular Primacy 3. It built upon the strong reputation and performances of the older model to deliver a tyre with safety and longevity at its heart.
A new tyre compound was designed for this model to deliver a strong traction with reliable braking performances. In rolling resistance tests in 2017, the Primacy 4 was found to generate 11% less rolling resistance than the Primacy 3, making it a slightly more fuel-efficient tyre.
This model also introduced a tread wear indicator to help motorists figure out when their tyres require replacement. With tests finding that the Primacy 4 can deliver up to 20% more mileage than the Primacy 3.
Buy Primacy 4 tyresSince 2012, the EU tyre label regulation has existed to ensure that tyres sold at point of contact have ratings in key performance areas. This is to ensure that motorists have an accessible way to determine the performance of a tyre.
The 3 main ratings that a tyre is scored on are:
The wet grip and fuel efficiency scores are marked on a scale from A – G. With A being the best, and G the worst.
Noise ratings are scored slightly differently, with the scores sorted into class A, B or C. On top of this the rolling noise of the tyre is measured in decibels and the number shown on the label.
As tyre models come in a variety of different sizes, you may find that the score changes from size to size – there is no model wide scoring.
