Remember when pickups did exactly what they said on the tin? Nissan USA does, and its latest workhorse-style truck proves you don’t need a supercharged V8 and a 10-inch lift kit to go anywhere — and look cool while you’re doing it.
We recently found out what happens when you throw vast amounts of time, power and money into creating the ultimate high-performance pickup: Ford’s Ranger Raptor. However, at the other end of the spectrum, Nissan’s latest Fontier Hardbody special edition proves an honest, paired-back vibe has a charm all of its own.
Confused? Well that’s because Nissan’s Frontier is called Navara in the UK, or should we say, was — the model was sadly axed in 2022 due to tightening emissions regulations. Bummer. Stick with us though, the new US-only version is sure to make you jealous of our American cousins.

Rather than adding bits, Nissan has removed any unnecessary tinsel from the exterior to create a look reminiscent of the iconic 1980s Frontier Hardbody. Mudflaps, black painted mirrors, body cladding, and even 17-inch wheels which perfectly recreate the originals, all make Nissan’s new Frontier feel like it comes from a time when Bruce Springsteen topped the charts.
While it might be born in the USA, the Frontier can go anywhere thanks to standard fit Hankook Dynapro AT2 or Dynapro HT tyres. According to Hankook, the AT2 ensures “…Stronger traction in wet, dry, and off-road conditions while decreasing road noise and increasing ride comfort. Its 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake rating also provides strong traction in severe winter conditions”. Plus, the Hankook’s tall sidewalls and rugged tread pattern complement Nissan’s utilitarian look nicely.
Underneath, the Frontier bolsters this ability with four-wheel drive, electronic locking differentials, and Bilstein off-road shock absorbers. Although, if Nissan was to sell the Frontier over here, its gutsy 3.8-litre petrol V6 would probably go down like a lead balloon with current fuel prices.
Just because it looks basic on the outside, don’t expect the interior to mirror that spartan feel. All the trappings of civilised motoring are available, including heated seats and steering wheel, dual zone climate control, power sunroof, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with optional Fender speakers.
This Frontier throwback to simpler times has got us pining for a back-to-basics British equivalent. Nissan, if you’re listening, throw a frugal four-pot diesel under the bonnet and let us relive our ‘80s off-road dreams!
Do you think ditching the Navara was a mistake? Let us know if you’d buy a British spec Frontier Hardbody.
