BYD stands for Build Your Dreams, and it’s one of the biggest car makers you’ve never heard of outside of China. However, Jonny Smith reckons your dreams are about to come true with the arrival of the Atto 3 EV compact SUV.
As Jonny explains, BYD is the biggest battery producer in the world and you can find them in everything from buses to mobile phones. This is good news for the Atto 3 as it means it has a high-tech ‘blade’ battery cell layout that uses less space in the car. It’s also been designed to deliver a real-world driving range of up to 260 miles on a full charge even in cold weather.
The BYD Atto 3 has a very comfortable ride across all types of road, helped by its Continental EcoContact 6Q tyres that are designed for low noise and energy use while delivering the best for grip, braking, and steering.
It might not be the sportiest car to drive, but Jonny finds out the interior design has been inspired by the gym. From air vents made to look like dumb bells and the kettle bell-style gear lever, to the material on the centre armrest that resembles a running machine track, it’s all well made and stands out. There’s also a central infotainment screen that rotates between upright and landscape layouts. It results in an EV SUV that Jonny thinks might well tempt buyers away from Hyundai and Kia, and many other rivals to the BYD Atto 3.
