As a Radio 1 DJ, Greg James is used to spotting hits. But does he think this new Renault will top the EV sales charts? Ride along with The Late Brake Show as they put the R5 through its paces in sunny Southern France.
By now, you’ve probably seen plenty of taster reviews for Renault’s retro-styled new R5 — including Jonny’s own first-look walkaround — but today we find out what it’s like to live with.
For guest star Greg, testing the R5 in its natural habit (Nice) is actually a pilgrimage of sorts, as he recalls making the same trip in his father’s Renault 25 many decades ago. And, as a self-professed fan of the brand, who better to judge if the new R5 still oozes with trademark French charm?
First impressions are positive. Both Jonny and Greg are fans of the little Renault’s concept-inspired looks, citing the squat, chunky proportions and flared arches as particular highlights. Greg particularly enjoys the bold colour palette, stating, “they’ve remembered to make it fun. I think it would also appeal to people who have never heard of the original 1970s model.”
Inside, the nostalgic touches prove equally enjoyable. From the patterned headliner to the virtual assistant which evokes memories of Clippy the Microsoft helper from the 1990s, the vibes are immaculate. And all this style doesn’t come at the expense of practicality: the R5’s 326-litre boot manages to swallow Greg James comfortably — though getting out proves more challenging.

Out on the road, Jonny’s 25 years of experience in motoring journalism mean he’s best qualified to pass comment on the Renault’s chassis and handling dynamics. Fortunately, the news is good. It might not be as ballistically fast as some of its EV peers — the spicier Alpine A290 is on its way for those looking for more grunt — but the 8 second 0-60 mph time means the R5’s performance is more in keeping with the old-school hot hatches it imitates.
Switching seats, Greg gets to sample the Renault’s handling on challenging switchback roads. Tipping the hatch into hairpins with a little enthusiasm, he’s impressed with how well it sticks to the tarmac. Plus, compared to his own BMW i3 S electric supermini, Greg prefers the superior ride quality and refinement of the Renault.
Is there anything the pair don’t like about the new Renault 5? You’ll need to watch the video to find out.
