What’s got nine models and three package options, and counting? The new Mercedes E-class Saloon and Estate. There's something for everyone in Mercedes’ new E-class, from rear-wheel (not in the UK though, yet) or all-wheel drive versions to petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid models.
Plus, the package options, starting with Avantgarde equipment. Then there’s Avantgarde Advanced and Avantgarde Advanced Plus Package. A similar approach has been applied to the appearance: there’s the Exclusive line, with iconic Mercedes star on the bonnet and open-pore wood with aluminium trim. If Exclusive seems too basic, there’s always Exclusive Premium and Exclusive Premium Plus. At this point, you’d be forgiven for thinking ‘Surely they could come up with a more engaging naming system?’ But this is all part of Mercedes ‘new packaging logic,’ which bundles together frequently requested equipment, which can be added to with other packages.

It doesn’t really matter how Mercedes markets its features. The upgrades, and there are plenty, are there for those willing to fork out. So, let’s dive into the five features in the new Mercedes E-Class that stood out to us:
As keyless vehicle entry becomes more common, brands are having to up their game to stay ahead of the curve. Mercedes’ Keyless Go goes beyond the entry and start feature. It’s an ‘access-and-drive authorization feature’ with both locking and unlocking capabilities alongside faster engine start up. Pre-installed for the Digital Vehicle Key, drivers can start and lock the E-Class by carrying a compatible device, which can be shared digitally with (trusted) friends and family.
Smartphone integration is hardly new, but through its MBUX Entertainment Plus system, Mercedes seems keen to revolutionize the conference room. Now, according to Mercedes, drivers can participate in video conferences via the optional selfie and video camera.
Again, Mercedes isn’t reinventing the wheel here but through its MBUX Interior Assistant, drivers and passengers can enjoy the benefits of the Thermotronic automatic climate control. The E-class Saloon and Estate are fitted with four climate zones and automatic digitally controlled air vents, meaning no more complaints about temperature from kids in the backseat and a chilly breeze upfront to stay alert can be focused solely on the driver. A win for Passenger Princesses everywhere.
For an extra £2,800, buyers can opt for Mercede’s all-round ‘Airmatic’ air suspension system with ADS+ continuously adjustable damping and rear-axle steering. It’s worth noting that for mild hybrid owners, air-sprung rear axle comes as standard in the E-class estate, but they can get full support from Airmatic with ADS+ air suspension as an add-on.
It would be remiss of us not to comment on Mercedes’ choice of Continental as its original equipment off the factory line. Continental's EcoContact 6 Q tyres deliver exceptionally energy-efficient driving with optimised noise levels. It also passes on other benefits to the driver, including long service life and low energy consumption. When the weather turns, Mercedes has approved Continental’s WinterContact TS 860 S for maximum safety on mud and snow. Offering precise handling on dry and wet roads in cold temperatures, and solid grip on snowy ground, drivers can feel an extra sense of confidence when braking in winter.
Only recently launched, we’ll have to wait and see what the market thinks of the new E-class. As it’s now on its sixth-generation, we feel pretty confident in saying it will be well received. What do you make of these features? Would you add something else to the list?
