How much to install an EV charger at home?

The initial cost of installing an EV charger at home will vary. The price depends on several factors such as the type of charger you are looking to install, the location of where you want the charger to be, and the complexity of the installation.

On average, an EV charger installation will cost between £800 and £1,500. This is for a basic home EV charger.

Can I install my own EV charging point?

No, it is not recommended that you install your own charging points. Only technicians with the relevant experience and the correct qualifications should carry out this type of electrical work.

The installation of an EV charger involves high-voltage electricity. So we recommend that you hire a qualified and certified electrician - who has experience with EV chargers.

How to install EV charger at home?

The general steps include hiring a qualified and certified electrician. They will check that your home's electrical system can handle the power requirements. Once you have decided on where the charger is to go, the electrician can install it. You'll then need to test the charger to make sure it's working correctly.

An EV charger installation will take several hours. Or even a full day. The actual timeframe will depend on the complexity of the installation.

Schedule the installation on a day when you can be home and available to answer any questions.

What is the EV Chargepoint Grant?

The EV Chargepoint Grant (also called an electric vehicle chargepoint grant) helps cover the cost of installing a home chargepoint for eligible applicants.

How much can I get?

You can receive either £350 or 75% off the total cost of purchasing and installing a chargepoint—whichever is lower.

If you're a landlord, there is a different process for applying for the grant.

Who is eligible?

You may qualify if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • You own and live in a flat (including those bought through shared ownership) or rent a residential property.
  • Your home has a private off-street parking space.
  • You own or use an eligible electric vehicle.

You cannot apply if:

  • You own and live in a house, unless it has been converted into flats and you live in one of them.
  • You rent a property where the landlord also lives (e.g., as a lodger).
  • You are planning to move home.
  • You have already claimed this grant or previous versions of it (EVHS or the Domestic Recharge Scheme).
  • You want to replace or relocate an existing chargepoint.
  • Your property legally requires a chargepoint to be installed (e.g., in a new build home).

What are the property requirements?

  • Your home must be in the UK (excluding the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man).
  • The grant is only available for an existing residential property that you currently live in (not for unoccupied or newly built properties).
  • If you rent, you may need to provide a rental agreement as supporting evidence.

What are the parking requirements?

  • Your parking space must be off-street, private, and clearly defined (but it does not have to be attached to your property).
  • You must have legal access to the space at all times.
  • You may need to provide Land Registry documents or permission from a freeholder if you live in a block of flats.
  • Your installer will check if your parking space allows for safe EV charging.

What vehicle do I need to qualify?

Your vehicle must be on the list of OZEV-approved electric vehicles, and you must provide proof that you:

  • Own the vehicle.
  • Lease it for at least 6 months.
  • Use it as a work vehicle for at least 6 months.
  • Have one on order.

If you lease a vehicle and the chargepoint is included, the lease agreement must:

  • Show that you own the chargepoint after payment is complete.
  • List the cost of the chargepoint and installation (including VAT).
  • Ensure the chargepoint meets warranty requirements.
  • Confirm that your vehicle lease is at least 6 months long.

Your installer will require proof of your lease agreement before proceeding with the installation.
