Regularly checking the condition of your tyres is an important task and once that can help to ensure they are road worthy.
Here are some simple steps to carry out:
1. Test the tread depth - the minimum legal limit for a tyre’s tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. To measure tread depth, use a tread depth gauge or a 20p coin. If the outer band of the coin is visible when placed between the tread groove, they are still legal.
2. Check for any visible damage – tyres need to be free from cuts, bulges, lumps and tears in order to be roadworthy. If you can see any damage, have your tyre checked as soon as possible by a professional. They should be able to advice on whether you need replacement tyres or not.
3. Inspect the sidewalls – make sure aren’t any cracking or splits opening up on the sidewalls of your tyres. Perished tyres can lead to an air leak or even a burst tyre if not addressed quickly.
4. Check air pressure - tyres should always be inflated to their recommended air pressure, as written in your car’s handbook. If a tyre has incorrect air pressure, their performance will suffer, fuel consumption will likely increase, and the lifespan of the tyre will be cut short.
